Who doesn’t know, the fearsome beast and the legend whose magic could look at people and animals and turn them into to stone?
Already in antiquity, the picture of the Medusa was very popular as an amulet.
Medusa’s Legend
The legends about the Gorgon Medusa are varied, and the origin is often uncertain. The classical Greek narrative begins with a beautiful young woman, whose love charm even deluded the sea god Poseidon.
The lovemaking of the two, for which she fatally had chosen the Temple of Athena on the Acropolis in Athens, was abruptly disrupted by the appearance of the angry goddess. Athena was so upset because of the desecration of her sanctuary that she turned the beauty in a figment of viciousness and ugliness.
Medusa grew snakes instead of hair on the head, between their sharp teeth were their tongue hanging out of the mouth. She had wings, and had a fearsome look that turned everyone to stone, who dared to look her in the face. Together with the Gorgons, Stheno and Euryale, she spread fear and terror.
Polydectes, the King of Seriphos, meanwhile, coveted the beautiful Danae and wanted to take her as wife. Perseus was a semi-God, and the King devised a plan to get him out of the way.
With a list that he received, Perseus, to confront Medusa! After some adventures, he won a number of magical artifacts, for example a cloak of invisibility and wing shoes. By Athena, he received a polished, shiny shield made of bronze and Hermes a sickle studded with diamonds.
Perseus discovered many animals and people who had previously been turned into stone by Medusa. When he finally sneaked up on the Sleeping Medusa, he used the shield as a mirror, and beheaded the monster. He tucked her severed head in a sack, because even in death, the magic of the Medusa was still effective.
The head of Medusa was used several times by Perseus to make freeze enemies to stone. Finally, he gave the trophy of Athena wearing the Medusa's head on the plate.
