The everyday equipment with glasses and ceramics is also really well made and has survived the hard life of a soldier well. In general, the range of products is truly sensational and offers unique products from the Roman era for many age groups and requirements, from hardcore legionnaires to little Roman fans of primary school age.

Satisfied customers

The Dominikanermuseum Rottweil presents in its department "Roman Rottweil - Arae Flaviae" the life in the only Roman city in Baden-Wuerttemberg. We have been a customer of Römershop for a long time for our own museum shop and are convinced of the high and, above all, consistently high quality of the products. The entire team is always looking forward to new products and our shop is an attraction for our visitors thanks to good replicas.

Hello and thank you very much for the great products!

Our students were thrilled with the papyrus coloring pictures and the scarabs. As promised, I am sending you photos of the work with the coloring pictures. I wrote a review for the "scarab" coloring picture, but it can also be added to all the other pictures, since we had different motifs.

The lovingly and authentically designed products from the Römer-Shop have been accompanying me for years and even decades in the field of ancient representation. As a centurion in a Roman military unit until a few years ago, the stationery, from wax tablets to papyrus scrolls, was extremely helpful for high-quality appearances and presentations at museum festivals, in reenactment and in museum education work.

The card is easy to work with and the cardboard is sturdy enough for such projects. Perhaps small cast figures and horses on a plastic base would be a useful addition to the shop, rather than the cardboard pictures. My 12-year-old son had fun making something like that

"When Little Romans Played Legionaries" – Toys in Antiquity

Children playing in a Roman street with wooden swords and legionary shields | Der Römer Shop

Childhood in Ancient Rome – Playing with Courage, Discipline, and Imagination

In the streets of Rome, no real swords clashed – yet the sound of play was the same. Even the children of antiquity imitated the world of adults. Miniature helmets, small wooden swords, and hand-carved shields were part of their everyday life. Historians believe they were often made from leftover materials – crafted by fathers, slaves, or older siblings.

Such play was more than pastime: it was preparation for life. Boys practiced discipline and courage, while girls reenacted domestic life or temple rituals in role-playing games. Wood, clay, and fabric were the materials of imagination – and the beginning of many stories. Today, when someone holds a wooden sword, they experience not only the joy of play but also a glimpse of that Roman childhood where playing already meant learning.

From Play to History – How Tradition Remains Alive

Roman toys were simple but meaningful. Archaeological finds from Pompeii and Egypt reveal small wooden weapons and helmets proudly worn by children. They reflect a culture in which play was not merely fun, but a way to learn courage, discipline, and community.

Little Heroes, Great Values

Children love adventure – parents love purpose. Our Roman wooden swords and craft helmets offer both: a safe, sustainable play experience that promotes knowledge and conveys values. No plastic, no rush – but with wood, history, and heart.

  • Proven quality: Handpicked materials, durable and resource-friendly
  • Hands-on knowledge: Playful learning with historical background
  • Sustainable gifting: Meaningful instead of short-lived
  • Perfect for creative families: Learn, craft, and discover together as a team

This is how toys are created that connect generations – historically conscious, child-friendly, and sustainably designed.

Crafting History Instead of Just Telling It

Roman history becomes a family project – with craft kits that make knowledge tangible. When parents and children design helmets and swords together, more than just toys are created: a piece of the past that comes alive in the here and now.
This is what it could look like: In the afternoon at the kitchen table, the craft helmet is assembled, the children decorate the shield with their own symbols, and then the Roman “parade” begins in the living room. Parents tell stories about why a legionary carried his gladius or how discipline and community shaped life in Rome.

Creative Family Time with Historical Depth

Each crafting session becomes a small journey through time: children discover history through play, and parents enjoy shared moments full of curiosity and conversation. The best part: Everything is based on sustainable materials made of wood and cardboard – safe, durable, and meaningful.
This is how crafting becomes a journey through time that connects – history with heart, knowledge, and family.
