The Qumran scrolls were first discovered between 1947 and 1956 in rock caves around the ruined sites of Khirbit Qumran in the West Bank. Among them were about 850 scrolls in clay jars dating from ancient Judaism between 250 B.C. and A.D. 40.
The oldest Bible manuscripts were safely stored in this Qumran jar. The religious community used these vessels to hide the contents from the Roman invaders and to safely deposit the scriptures in the caves.
