Iron Gall Ink Black
The traditionally made iron gall ink enables you to immerse yourself in the world of ancient scholars—for they, too, appreciated the quality of this ink.
Practically everlasting!
This black ink has been used since ancient times up to the high Middle Ages, as its composition of purely natural products gives it a durability that cannot be achieved with synthetic inks. Due to this special quality, iron gall ink is still used today to sign state treaties, as a signature made years ago is still visible even after prolonged storage. Iron gall ink, made according to historical recipes, exhibits light and air resistance that is unmatched.
Made according to centuries-old original recipe
Quality proves itself: our iron gall ink is made in the same way as it was practiced in ancient times. The first recorded recipe for this ink dates back to the 3rd century BC.
As a basic ingredient, dried galls have always been processed, from which, after being crushed and boiled, gallic acid is extracted. Galls are the eggs deposited on oak leaves by the oak gall wasp. Only water, natural iron sulfate, and gum arabic are added, the latter preventing the premature coagulation of the ink and thus increasing its longevity. So that you can enjoy your iron gall ink even after longer storage, the glass bottle is carefully sealed with a real cork stopper, and additionally, a wax seal depicting Mercury, the messenger of the gods in ancient Rome, is affixed.
When writing with iron gall ink, the script initially appears light brown but turns deep black as it dries, as the contained iron sulfate oxidizes with the air.
