Viking jewelry Hiddensee pendant bronze
Among the most beautiful pieces of jewelry from the Viking Age are those made using the so-called granulation or filigree technique. Beads, wires, eyelets, rings and other small parts were soldered onto various types of base plates. So-called patrices were found in the harbor basin of the Viking settlement of Haithabu.
Gold treasure from Hiddensee
These original models were used to make base plates, which were later refined by granulation. Particularly valuable amulets made of precious metal include the Thorhammer from Skåne and the gold treasure from Hiddensee. This largest gold treasure from the Viking Age on German soil was discovered between 1872 and 1875 on the beach at Neuendorf on the Baltic Sea island.

Marvel at the Viking treasure chest here!
The so-called treasure of Hiddensee was washed up on the Baltic coast by storm surges in 1872 and 1874. The find, which consists of a choker, a disc brooch, six large cross-shaped pendants, four small cross-shaped pendants and four small intermediate links, is made of pure gold!
Mysterious origin: Hiddensee jewelry
There is speculation about the owner and origin of the Hiddensee treasure from the Viking era. Due to the preciousness of the jewelry and its chronology, Harald Bluetooth is thought to have been the owner. However, the Danish king cannot be identified with certainty as the owner of the jewelry. It is also assumed that Haithabu was the place of manufacture because patrices matching the Hiddensee jewelry have been found there. A patrix (from the Latin pater/father) is a type of bronze die with raised structures over which the desired metal, in this case gold, was molded. The production of such a patrix created a template that could be used again and again to reproduce identical pieces of jewelry.
It has not yet been possible to prove that the jewelry from Hiddensee was actually made in Haithabu. However, there is no doubt that the pieces of jewelry made using the granulation and filigree technique, such as this one on the Viking pages of the Forum Traiani, are among the most beautiful pieces of jewelry from the Viking Age.
