Viking Jewelry Grip Animal Amulet Bronze
This grip animal pendant has been newly and massively reworked based on templates of the Borre animal. Original pieces of this type come in varying quality (mostly thin sheet metal with poorly worked details) from the entire Scandinavian region of the late 9th and early 10th centuries, such as from Varby, Birka, and Haithabu. It is a widely spread mass production of the Viking Age, but our piece has been 'newly created' by hand and finely detailed.
- Size 35x30mm

The Viking Grip Animal
Rough, strong, and bold is the Viking grip animal. Thus, it is a fitting symbol for the rugged people of the Vikings as it shows the difference between the earliest Viking art and that of the preceding times. The grip animal so much suited the taste of the Vikings that it dominated vast areas of Viking art for a century and a half. And even after, it did not disappear. It reappeared in later centuries - as a motif in Scandinavian art. As the name implies, the main features of the grip animal are its claws. They are parts of its own anatomy or that of surrounding animals. However, the origin of the grip animal is not known.
In Broa, it appears in hints, and in some carvings of the Oseberg burial site, it is devotedly depicted to create a dense crowd of interlocking animals. The inventive richness of Oseberg's carving school was so great that it can be found in any diversity. There is even a grip animal in human form as the decoration of a ship!
Grip Animal in the Borre Style of the Vikings
The bronze grip animal pendant on the pages of the Romer Shop under the category Museum Shop and Gift Ideas in the Viking section was made based on templates of the Borre animal. The Borre style, also known as the grip animal style, is a stylistic phase of early medieval art that originated from the ninth to tenth centuries. It is named after the locality of Borre in the Norwegian municipality of Horten. The style is characterized by animal and knot ornaments. The Borre style is followed by the Jelling style.
