Next, the strips were placed tightly side by side with another layer laid perpendicular on top. Both layers were pounded until juice appeared, acting like glue. After drying, the newly formed papyrus sheet was smoothed with a stone or wood, creating an ideal writing surface.

The Writing
A milestone in human history! It made it possible to communicate one's thoughts to others, spread and preserve knowledge. Along with stone and clay tablets, papyrus sheets were the first carriers of writing.
Simple and cheap to produce, light, rollable and foldable, and writable with simple means. The forerunner of our modern paper could only emerge from a true high culture, a melting pot of knowledge and experience. Knowledge had to be quickly and easily conveyed and spread to as many people as possible. Otherwise, an imperial state apparatus with an advanced economic system and construction industry along the Nile would have been unthinkable. That is why scholars in ancient Egypt began to use the Nile-homed papyrus plant. The fibers were mashed with water, pressed flat, and sun-dried. The result - paper - could be cut or torn into usable and handy sheets and inscribed with simple charcoal.
