Bust of Cicero
The famous Roman lawyer, philosopher, writer and politician Markus Tullius Cicero lived in one of the most exciting epochs of Roman history: late republican Rome was characterised by upheavals, rapid changes of power and the ambitions of some particularly outstanding personalities. Among these ambitious Romans was the young Cicero, who - coming from a family of knights - first made a name for himself as a lawyer and later became the first of his relatives, as homo novus , to embark on a political career and even made it to the consulship (63 BC).
As a friend of the republican form of government and thus a bitter opponent of Caesar's dictatorship, today's historical research owes countless detailed information about the events of this eventful time from the perspective of the "losers" to Cicero's writings, especially his letters - after Caesar's assassination, Cicero was murdered on the run in the course of the proscriptions of the second triumvirate.

The portrait of Cicero
It is well known that the portraits of ancient statesmen, poets or philosophers do not so much reflect the actual appearance of the person as an idealised conception, determined by the social ideas of the time. Cicero lived and worked in the late Roman Republic, where political and intellectual leaders were expected to be virtuous, caring, wise, and strong and courageous. These qualities can be found in the exaggerated, so-called veristic portraits of this period. The portraits are meant to be particularly ""close to reality""; the men are older, more experienced and have learned a lot from life.
The forehead furrowed by wrinkles and the deep-set eyes of Cicero testify to all-nighters full of concern for the welfare of the state. This can be found in the portraits of Cicero that were scattered in large numbers across Rome in antiquity, as he had already achieved some fame as a statesman and writer. The portraits have been identified with certainty on the basis of inscriptions, but he was usually not depicted with too exaggerated an age.
Replica of the Cicero portrait in the Roman Shop
The replica of the bust of Cicero from the Roman Shop shows him in a typical orator's toga and in his most famous portrait type. With a serious look, a face full of wrinkles and thinning hair, this important protagonist of Roman history presents himself here as an approximately 25 centimetre high bust in alabaster plaster, which has been elaborately produced according to the original image. Take a look and bring one of the most famous men in history into your home.
