How do I use my wax tablet?
Writing:
With the pointed side of the stylus, using light pressure in "downward movements", carve the letters into the wax.
Erasing:
The flat side of the stylus can be used to erase what has been written. To do this, take the stylus as shown and place your index finger on the flattened part of the stylus.
In this way, you can smooth out the wax again with
gentle pressure in a "pulling" motion.
Fun fact
The term "tabula rasa" comes from Roman times and the use of the wax tablet. It means "smoothly scraped slate" and is used as a figure of speech for "clearing the air".
Medieval Wax Tablet Made of Genuine Beech Wood
Just like in the Middle Ages: The writing tablet made of beech wood is filled with real beeswax and can be smoothed again with the back of the stylus after writing. This makes it reusable. Incidentally, the Romans already used this principle in antiquity! However, the original template from the Middle Ages comes from a medieval book illustration from the Codex Manesse of the 14th century.
The Codex Manesse
The "Codex Manesse," also known as the "Great Heidelberg Song Manuscript," was created between around 1300 and 1340 in Zurich and is the largest collection of Middle High German lyric and poetry. The codex consists of 426 parchment leaves written on both sides in the format of 35.5 x 25 cm, which were paginated by a later hand - however, about 140 pages are barely written on or not at all.
- Dating: Middle Ages around 1400
- Dimensions: 18x9 cm
- Material: Solid beech wood 8mm
- Accessories included: Wood stylus
Famous Miniatures
The manuscript became famous mainly for its colorful full-page miniatures, which precede the verses of 137 of the singers - another one, which cannot be assigned to any poet, consists solely of a pen drawing. The miniatures show the poets in idealized form engaged in courtly activities and are considered an important document of Upper Rhine Gothic book painting. The miniatures were created by four painters; the so-called "Foundation Painter" is attributed with 110 miniatures, the first supplementary painter with 20, the second with four, and the third with three miniatures and one preliminary drawing.
Miniatures from the Codex Manesse also adorned stamp series from the Principality of Liechtenstein (1961–1963), the German Federal Post in 1970, and the German Federal Post Berlin, also in 1970.
Writing Like in the Middle Ages
By the way, students in the Middle Ages often still wrote on wax tablets like these. Students can experiment with what school was like in days long gone. The advantage of wax tablets: It doesn’t matter if you make a mistake, because the wax can easily be smoothed again. Where students today use corrector pens, in the past, wax made things much simpler! Let yourself be inspired and fascinated by the medieval wax tablets. They make a nice gift for all friends of the medieval lifestyle.
