How do I use my writing board?
Writing:
Using the pointed end of the stylus, carve the letters into the wax using light pressure in a "downward" motion.
Erasing:
The flat side of the stylus can be used to erase writing. To do this, pick up the stylus as shown and place your finger on the flattened part of the stylus.
In this way you can smooth out the wax by applying light pressure in a 'pulling' motion.
Fun fact
The term "tabula rasa" comes from Roman times and the use of the wax tablet. It means "smoothly scraped slate" and is used as a figure of speech for "clearing the table".
What do archaeologists say?
Fact:
From an archaeological point of view, there is no evidence of writing tablets with round corners. All the corners of the wax surfaces are right-angled.
And why?
Well, when scraping out the wax surfaces to refill them, the tools needed are right-angled (e.g. wax spatulas). This makes it very easy to remove the wax without damaging the board.

Notes and Messages on Roman Wax Tablet
The Roman wax tablets are made purely by hand in Germany. A written-on wax tablet can be used repeatedly and is described and smoothed out again with a stylus forged from bronze, brass, or iron. The Roman wax tablet was used for notes and messages until the late Middle Ages.
Those who wish to delve into the written traces of antiquity should reach for the wax tablet with stylus! The advantage over our modern paper is simple: nothing on the wax writing surface is permanent! Since the Roman wax tablet (Latin: cera, tabula) is coated with beeswax. Wax tablets like these from the Roman shop under the stationery category were used until the Middle Ages and were written with a stylus (Latin: stilus), by etching letters into the wax layer. Tabulae ceratae are what the Roman wax tablet books are called, which have been found in large numbers. And that's where the term "tabula rasa" comes from! Which means nothing other than smoothing the wax layer with the back of the stylus. Literally, it means "erased tablet" – that can be rewritten.
With Wax Tablet and Stylus on the Traces of Ancient Writing Art
Many achievements of antiquity have survived to this day – they have proven their worth. Some have been refined or adapted to modern needs. For example, the ancient Greeks did not yet have a computer, but the wax tablet can rightly be regarded as a predecessor of today's computers – or even more so the laptop, because they could be taken anywhere!
The school education in Roman times would have been unthinkable without the Roman wax tablet. The inside pages of the beechwood books are gouged out. Only a rim remains on the outside. Subsequently, the writing tablets are filled with real beeswax, which can be easily described and smoothed with a stylus. The wax tablet books are perfectly suited for etching Roman numerals and Latin homework – making the tasks so much more fun!
Ancient Writing Experience!
Even today, using a wax tablet with a stylus is a true writing experience! For this reason, they are experiencing a renaissance among people with a sense of the extraordinary. Especially enthusiasts of ancient cultures nowadays use the exceptional duo of wax tablet and stylus. Not only does it feel great, but it also looks decorative!
