Testimony: The 'Weapon Dancer'

The original of this small figurine was found in a woman's grave at the archaeological site in the Swedish town of Kungsängen. The unique representation dates from the Viking Age and was probably made around the year 800.

The small sculpture, which was probably a fertility symbol, measures 2.8 cm in the original. It was cast in bronze, as was customary at that time, and today gives us an impressive testimony to the ritual life of the Viking Age. It is located in the State Historical Museum of Stockholm.

The municipality Upplands-Bro in the province Stockholms län, in which the amulet was excavated, still has this silhouette of Odin on its coat of arms today.

  • early viking epoch
  • Reproduction of the original: The 'weapon dancer' from Ekhammar, Kungsängen
  • Place of discovery: the historic province of Uppland
  • dimensions: 3 x 1,9 cm
  • Surface: silver plated

The cult around Odin

Even if today no confirmed statements about the original meaning of the small weapon dancer are possible, many assumptions were made. One interpretation is that he is a priest of the Odin cult. In his hands he holds a sword and two crossed bundles of grain, which are sometimes interpreted as spears.

In the Nordic mythology of Eddic poetry, Odin is the main god. The father of the gods is associated with war and death. He is also the lord of runes, magic and poetry. Due to his great power he was always given thanks in many regions at the harvest festival. The harvest yield was thus also a merit of Odin's kindness, which is why a part of the harvest was always given to him.

Archaic piece of jewellery

Even today, this filigree piece of jewellery impresses with its archaic charisma. It unites ancient myths of mankind and symbols that never lose their meaning. The silver-plated surface gives the small pendant a noble look. Like its model, the pendant has a loop so that it can always be worn close to the body.
