The most famous Sphinx

The most famous sphinx is the Sphinx of Giza. It stands on the western bank of the Nile, is made of monolithic limestone, was built in the 4th Dynasty of Egypt and measures 20 x 73.5 m. The Sphinx of Gizeh was built several times from sand. The Sphinx of Giza was repeatedly freed from sand, cleaned and restored. Today, parts of this sphinx are exhibited in the Egyptian and British museums. Sphinxes are usually built as male lions with a human head. In their function they serve as guardian figures in front of temple entrances. As statues they depict kings, pharaohs and Egyptian gods. Their attributes include sun disk, pectoral, double crown and uraeus snake.

Sphinxes and sphinx-like representations can be found since the 2nd millennium B.C. in a multitude of Near Eastern cultures and South American advanced civilizations. These cultural buildings also found their way into European art.
