Roman balsamarium
It took centuries before a balsamarium could be made from the glass of antiquity
"Take 60 parts sand, 180 parts ash from sea plants, 5 parts chalk - and you get glass."
These instructions are written on a clay tablet from the 7th century BC, which comes from the library of Ashurbanipal, an Assyrian king of the time. The recipe contains all the essential raw materials required for the production of glass. Production was not easy back then. And it would be several centuries before the glassmaking pipe was invented in Sidon, Syria. From this time onwards, around 200 years BC, glass could be produced in a variety of shapes and for household purposes.

The balsamarium - a bottle for ointments and perfume
In ancient Rome, glass goods were coveted luxury items.
In addition to jars, bottles and bowls, small balsamaria were used to store ointments, oils and perfume.
They were often mistakenly referred to as tear bottles, as they were found in graves during excavations. It was assumed that the tears of grief over the death of the deceased were collected in them and added to the grave. A heartfelt idea, but in fact the reason for their use was far less sad.
The Romans' fondness for bathhouses and thermal baths is well known. Beauty and body care played a major role and were as much a part of life as food and drink. Both the Roman and the Roman woman cared for their hair and skin with oils, ointments and fragrances. These were kept in a small balsamarium, also known as an unguentarium. These were small glass or ceramic bottles that were sealed with corks or pieces of wood to prevent the fragrance of the precious contents from evaporating.
Roman balsamarium made of green/blue glass
The balsamarium made of blue/green glass was hand-blown by a French workshop, so the size may vary. It has a height of between 9 - 13 cm.
An antique balsamarium from the 1st century AD served as a model.
Too good to leave unused
The small Roman balsamarium is a beautiful addition to a collection of antique glass objects, but is also suitable for use. Give it a chance to come in handy and use it in your bathroom as a stylish container for precious lotions or oils.
