Roman aryballos
The predecessor of the Roman aryballos
In ancient Greece, the aryballos was a storage vessel for anointing oils.
It was small and had a spherical belly in relation to its narrow neck. It had one or two handles, often none, and a wide, flat mouth plate.
It was the men's ointment bottle (the women's was the alabastron) and was carried by athletes on their way to the training grounds and arenas. It was filled with olive oil, together with the strigilis and a small sponge, and was tied to a ribbon on the arm. During the fights, it was taken off and hung on a wall in the gymnasium.
After training, the athletes rubbed the sweaty body with olive oil and then scraped off the oil soaked with dust and sweat with the strigilis. The strigilis was an iron or bronze device specially developed for this purpose, in the form of a handy hook.
Well - other countries, other customs.
The aryballos was also an important utensil in the practice of the healing professions and in hygiene.

The Aryballo in Rome - the city of gladiators
Rome was also addicted to sport and gambling. Would the Colosseum with its four storeys and 240 columns exist otherwise? The capital of the Roman Empire had a huge demand for athletes and gladiators and the need for aryballoi was great. An aryballos was often made of colored glass, but translucent pieces can still be seen in museums today. It was used in the same way as its Greek counterpart.
Roman aryballos - a replica
The small aryballos is a replica based on a model from the 3rd century AD that was found in France. It was mouth-blown in a French glassblowing workshop.
The typical streaks and small bubbles are a quality feature of Roman replicas.
The green aryballos measures approx. 7 x 9 cm, slight variations in size are possible and are typical for mouth-blown pieces.
This green aryballos with the unusual decorations on the sides of the glass could also serve a similar purpose today as its predecessors from historical times.
It is an interesting ornament for the table, display case or bathroom, attractive and unusual. It will arouse curiosity and attract everyone's attention.
