Roman quadriga relief: Race in Circus Maximus
Roman reliefs
Relief art was as popular with the Romans as it was with the Greeks. In monumental form, you could bear scenes of Rome's own history, mythology or everyday life on temples, altars or public buildings. However, more manageable reliefs have also survived from antiquity in large numbers: Small marble or limestone slabs in which sculptural figures were chiseled with great care. Depending on the intended use, the motifs can vary and show every conceivable scene from life in antiquity.
Roman quadriga relief with circus scene
The Roman quadriga relief with a scene from the Circus Maximus shows a typical motif of ancient relief art. A charioteer is driving his quadriga, his four-horse team, around the so-called Spina. The fact that this is actually the Circus Maximus can be seen in the way it is depicted. In the middle of the track there was a row of obelisks and statues to separate the outward and return legs. These same obelisks are indicated on the representation of the relief, as is common in representations of the Circus Maximus.

The Circus Maximus
The Circus Maximus, indicated on the quadriga relief, was largest place for chariot races in Rome, could accommodate up to 250,000 people according to ancient tradition. The area between the Aventine and Palatine was used for various competitions since the 6th century BC. Under Caesar, the expansion in marble began, which was continued by his successors. Even today, the typical oval shape can be seen in the cityscape.
