Epona the horse goddess
Bring life to your classroom - this relief of the Roman goddess Epona makes it possible. If she was originally the fertility goddess of the Celtic religion, she was also worshipped throughout the Gallic region in late antiquity after the Romans conquered. The Britons, Danubian peoples and even Greeks and North Africans also worshipped the goddess Epona.
A multicultural goddess
The goddess Epona was worshipped mainly by people whose lives depended on horses. Especially in the cavalry, which was a mixture of non-Italian peoples, Epona worship was very popular. Particularly many cavalry forces came from the province of Germania inferior (today parts of northern Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium), where, however, the goddess Epona was not worshipped locally. Rather, Epona worship is considered part of the "we-feeling" in the army.
The Epona of Walheim
On this relief plate, the goddess Epona is depicted on a powerful horse. The unusual depiction of Epona in a gentleman's seat is striking, while on most reliefs she sits either in a lady's seat on a horse or in the midst of several horses.
