The history of Roman parchment
In Roman times, writing material made from animal skin was called'membrana '. The term parchment first appears in late antique sources, such as the Edict of Diocletian (VII 38).
Parchment or papyrus?
Parchment did not compete with papyrus until the 4th century AD and soon replaced the plant-based writing material as "natural paper". This was because parchment could be produced locally everywhere and was therefore not dependent on the commodity papyrus, which was only available in a few regions worldwide, such as North Africa and Syria.
Parchment thus found its way into the book industry, not least because it was easier to correct what was written by 'scraping off' the ink than what was written on a papyrus sheet.
How is parchment made?
Parchment is produced in several stages. The animal skin is placed in a lime solution in which the hair is largely detached. The skin is then stretched in a wooden frame and scraped off with a special knife while it is still damp. Once all hair residue has been removed, the surface can be sanded to obtain a smooth surface suitable for writing.
Same production as in the past
This laborious process has hardly changed for thousands of years and is still practiced traditionally today.
Ancient tradition is maintained
Each animal skin is traditionally tanned and of good writing quality. Each parchment is unique and one of a kind. They are natural products with differences that are also a sign of quality.
Parchment has been used for thousands of years for writing on or for book covers.
