Cave canem Mosaic Kit. Small stones - great art
Mosaics (also known as mosaics) are among the jewels of artisanal craft. Their production was widespread in many cultures in ancient times. The exact time when the first pictures and ornaments made from small pieces were created is not precisely known. Near Ur, the legendary city between the Euphrates and Tigris, mosaic pieces were used to encase palm trunks with asphalt 2500 - 3000 years ago. In Greece, variously colored pebbles were used in the beginnings of this art form before colorful shards of glass or stone were employed to create works that became increasingly detailed and ornate.

Cave canem Mosaic Kit based on a template from Pompeii
In the fall of the year 79, the Roman city of Pompeii was almost completely buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. At that time, 8000 - 10000 inhabitants lived in this city in the southwest of the country. Due to preceding earthquakes, many inhabitants had already left their homes days earlier.
For almost 1500 years, the city remained buried under a layer of volcanic ash and pumice up to 25 meters high before it was made accessible to researchers and excavated in the 18th century.
From the vestibule of the House of the "Tragic Poet" (The Homeric House) comes the Cave Canem mosaic, which was meant to warn visitors and intruders of the courtyard dog. It served as the template for our Cave canem Mosaic Kit.
This old Pompeian house, about whose residents nothing else is known, amazes archaeologists and visitors today. Despite being very simply designed in the typical regional style, it features a series of extraordinary mosaic floors and frescoes, whose high quality and beauty made it famous beyond the country's borders.
With the Cave canem Mosaic Kit, you can stir a love of crafting, history, and art, not just in dog lovers.
After placing the stones, the mosaic can additionally be grouted with commercially available grout. However, if the stones are placed relatively densely, grouting is not necessary.
The Cave canem Mosaic Kit also makes a great gift idea!
