Iron Gallus Ink Black
Our real iron gall is made by a German manufacturer according to the original recipe using Iran Gallus, Gum Arabic and Iron Sulfate, just as in the ancient world and the middle ages.
The ink is first brown when you write with it on paper or papyrus, but over a few hours it turns dark when dry. Soon after, the black colour is perfect. This effect has been known for thousands of years.
The iron gall bottle is closed with a Roman wax seal on the cork. The seal shows the God Mercury, the god of the poets and writers, and was made with a Roman Signet Ring in our workshop.
Short info manufacture of iron gall:
The dry gall apples are crushed and overcooked to form Gallic acid (tannins). Then the iron sulphate is added together with the gum to prevent the flocculation. The ink can be kept for long, but is better protected against flocculation when you leave it with its airtight seal on.
