For over 4000 years, papyrus has been one of the most sought-after writing materials. Even today, this extraordinary writing material is used to make art and history lessons vivid and creative. But also, as an unusual writing material for thematic projects, special events, or anniversaries, real Egyptian papyrus is always something very special.
Real Egyptian Papyrus - Unique and Effective
Real Egyptian papyrus was made from a genus of sedge, the Cyperus Papyros. This plant was very desirable in antiquity as it was indispensable for the production of papyrus. Papyrus was easier to write on than, for example, the heavy clay tablets. This greatly facilitated correspondence.
The term papyrus most likely derives from the Egyptian word pa-en-per-aa. In translation, it means “that of the pharaoh,” which suggests that only the pharaoh held the monopoly.

Papyrus - Unique Production
Cyperus Papyrus grew in large clusters. After harvesting, the stems were peeled, cut into thin strips, soaked multiple times, and then beaten flat. The strips were then placed close together, and a second layer was placed on top crosswise. Both layers were beaten until sap oozed out, which acted as glue. After drying, the resulting papyrus sheet was smoothed with a stone or wood, creating an ideal writing surface.

Writing
A milestone in human history! It made it possible to communicate one's thoughts to others, spread knowledge and preserve it. Besides stone and clay tablets, papyrus sheets were the first writing carriers.
Simple and cheap to manufacture, light, rollable, and foldable, and writable with simple means. The forerunner of our modern paper could only emerge in a true high culture, a melting pot of knowledge and experience. Knowledge had to be quickly and easily brought close to and disseminated among as many people as possible. Otherwise, an imperial state apparatus with a highly developed economic system and construction industry on the Nile would not have been conceivable. Therefore, the scholars in ancient Egypt, who were based on the Nile, began to use the papyrus plant that grew there. The fiber was crushed, mixed with water, and the mass was flattened and dried in the sun. The result - paper - could be cut or torn into practical and handy sheets and written on with simple charcoal.
