If you plan a holiday and want to learn about Terra Sigillata or other Roman dishes, visit the region of the Rhine valley, endulge in the vinyards of the Rhineland-Palatinate and, of course, look up the original of our Roman dishes for example in one of the Terra-Sigillata-Museums. The one in Rheinzabern shows archeological finds from the Roman period from which most of this type of pottery derives. It is known as Terra Sigillata which was fashionable not only, but predominantly in the North-Western provinces of the Roman Empire.
The entire upper floor of the Museum is dedicated to the Roman ceramic production. The variety of the produced vessels occupies an entire room. Due to the origin of the finds, mainly from oven finds and pottery waste, many dishes are fantastically well preserved. Another room explains the production technique of Terra Sigillata. A stove with a filling was reconstructed in the middle of the room. It showcases show finds were stamped and shaped into cups, bowls, chalices, dishes – a wonderful world of artistic work.
