Kybele - worship of a mother of the gods
Originally from the Greek, the name Kybele carries the meaning of the great mother of the gods from the mountain (lat. magna mater).
Kybele was worshipped together with her lover Attis first in Phrygia of Asia Minor and later in Thrace, Greece and the Roman Empire.
The Roman cult Kybele cult began during the Second Punic War. In Sibylline books, the fate spell: "You lack the mother; therefore seek - I command you, Roman - the mother..." found approval. The Delphic oracle pretended to look for the mother of the gods on the Idaean heights of Phrygia. Then Kybele was brought to Rome in the form of a fist-sized meteorite. Incorporated into a silver statue, the goddess found her place on the Palatine in the Victoria Tempelihren.
The Romans saw in Cybele great mother of the gods, she stood for nature and fertility. She was depicted as a matron enthroned, with her crown in the shape of a city wall.
In the Roman Empire, priests introduced their followers to a veritable cult of Kybele with orgiastic rituals. Until late antiquity, the cult of Kybele was very widespread throughout the empire as a mystery cult.
