The art of glass from antiquity
Amulets and glass beads are among the oldest known glass objects. There is evidence of glass vessels from around 1500 BC. It is estimated that Asian
craftsmen brought the skill of glassmaking to Egypt. The first glass vessels are dated to the time of Thutmose (1504 to 1450 BC). Glass production in Mesopotamia and Egypt first flourished around 1200 B.C. Only small containers were made, which were probably used to store essences.
Mesopotamia and Syria became the centers of glass production in the 9th century BC and quickly spread the craft across the entire Mediterranean region.
It was not until the 1st century BC that Phoenician craftsmen in Sidon developed the pioneering technique of glassblowing.
The Romans refined the less expensive and time-consuming production technique of glassblowing. The patterns and shapes of blown glass were varied. Glass blowing also made it possible to produce large quantities, so that the luxury item became an everyday material.
In many cases, glass objects or a Roman glass bottle were elaborately decorated or painted with religious and historical scenes.
Most of the glass art techniques still used today are based on the ingenuity of Roman craftsmen.
