The Glass Art of Antiquity
Some of the oldest known glass objects include amulets and glass beads. Glass vessels have been documented since around 1500 BC. It is estimated that Asian craftsmen brought the skill of glassmaking to Egypt. The first glass vessels are dated to the time of Thutmose (1504 to 1450 BC). The first bloom of glass production in Mesopotamia and Egypt occurred around 1200 BC. Only smaller containers were produced, which were presumably used for storing essences.
Mesopotamia and Syria transformed into centers of glass production in the 9th century BC and quickly spread the craft throughout the Mediterranean.
It was not until the 1st century BC that Phoenician craftsmen in Sidon developed the pioneering technique of glassblowing.
The Romans refined the less expensive and time-consuming production technique of glassblowing. The patterns and shapes of blown glass were diverse. Glassblowing also enabled the production of large quantities, making what was once a luxury item a much more common material.
Many glass objects or a Roman glass bottle often featured elaborate decorations or paintings with religious and historical scenes.
Most of the glass art techniques still used today are based on the inventive spirit of Roman craftsmen.
