Medieval wax tablet out of real beech
Completely like in the Middle Ages: The writing tablet fabricated out of beech is filled with real beeswax and can be smoothed after writing on it with one end of the pencil. So it stays usable for a long time. The principal already the Romans used in Antiquity! But the original model form the Middle Ages comes from a book illumination from the Codex Manesse from the 14th century.
The Codex Manasse
The Codex Manesse, as well called Great handwriting of songs from Heidelberg was created between circa 1300 and 1340 in Zurich and is the most extensive collection of Middle High German poetry of songs and sayings.

Famous became the handwriting mainly because of its colourful miniatures filling entire pages, that were put in front of the lyrics of 137 singers - another, that could not be assigned to any poet, only consisted out of one feather's drawing. The miniatures show poets in idealised forms while courtly activities and are considered as the most meaningful document of Upper Rhine gothic book illumination.
Writing like in the Middle Ages
By the way the students of the Middle Ages often still wrote on wax tablets like that one. Students can experiment in the way, like it was in school of long past times. Advantage of the wax tablet: It does not matter, when there was made a mistake, because it is easy to smooth the wax again. Where students of today use ink eraser, it was a lot easier with the wax in as today! Be inspired and fascinated by the medieval wax tablets.
