Interesting facts about seals
The earliest seals were not pressed in wax, but in clay. Instead of a stamp, a stone cylinder with carved figures or characters was used - the so-called scroll seal. The oldest finds from the Sumerian culture date back to around 3000 BC.
Until the 13th century, seals were reserved for the nobility and the high clergy.
Metal seals made of gold, lead or silver, also known as bulls, were only used by popes and Byzantine emperors in the Holy Roman Empire for particularly important documents. They were usually embossed on both sides.
Wax seals were frequently used in the Middle Ages to seal documents of all kinds, to prove authenticity and to identify the sender.
The colors could not be chosen freely:
Red sealing wax was reserved for sovereign rulers such as emperors and kings.
Green sealing wax was used by abbeys and monasteries.
White sealing wax was used to mark free imperial cities.
The black sealing wax could only be used by the patriarch of the city of Jerusalem and the grand masters of the ecclesiastical orders of knights.
To prevent misuse of the seals, high officials were appointed to guard them - the so-called seal keepers.
Wax seals are still used today - for example on diplomatic contracts, some appointment and award documents or notarial certifications.
The color of the wax can now be chosen at will - so red sealing wax is no longer reserved for rulers alone!
And what can you do with it?
A romantic letter to a loved one who is transported back in time when the seal is broken ... definitely one of the most beautiful uses of sealing wax red!
