The papyrus roll is ready mounted on a wooden stick made of real beech wood with turned end pieces. Write like the ancient Romans
The ancient scroll made its way via Egypt to Greece and Europe. The papyrus "book" arrived in Roman markets in rolls, usually made of twenty papyrus leaves (kollemata). It was preferably written on the inside of the roll (recto), where the direction of the fibers of the papyrus is horizontal and the ancient writing tube (calamus) or quill (penna scriptoria) has the least resistance. Incidentally, on the first leaf of a scroll (left), the fibers always ran vertically (verso). This leaf, the so-called protokollon, remained blank and served only as a protective cover for the roll.
Ancient papyrus roll: a Roman book!
Writing was done in parallel columns of different widths. For scientific and philosophical writings were written in wide, for speeches in narrow columns. Ancient authors wrote even across the glue margins of the papyrus leaves. In Roman times, most texts were separated with dots between each word, which made for better readability. The scroll was finally provided with a book navel (tituli) made of real parchment. The name of the author or the title of the book was written there so that the scroll could be found quickly.
