The papyrus scrolls are handmade from real papyrus leaves in the workshop of the Forum Traiani, so that you can inscribe the ancient scrolls yourself with ancient or modern texts. The best way to do this is with the authentic writing material: a goose quill pen or a reed writing tube, which you can also find and purchase on these pages of the Roman store. The papyrus scroll is made in one piece, over the entire length of the scroll.
Papyrus scrolls - scrolls today
In the Roman store you will find everything to continue the tradition of the ancient scroll. The various scrolls have two wooden bars at the beginning and end of the medium. This tightens the writing surface of the papyrus scroll and the rods also serve as a practical holding device. The papyrus scrolls are all made of high quality papyrus. The scrolls with wooden rod to write yourself are available in different sizes. With the written scroll Ovid even learning Latin becomes exciting!
The book of the Romans: the ancient scroll
Originals of such papyrus scrolls were widely used in the Roman Empire and served as a scroll for private and literary texts. Many of these papyrus scrolls were found in the only Roman library preserved in Italy, in the Villa dei Papiri - the 'Villa of the Papyri' near Pompeii.
Ancient scrolls in Roman markets
The "book" of papyrus came to Roman markets in scrolls. Usually, an ancient book consisted of twenty papyrus leaves, called kollemata. Scrolls were preferably written on the inside of the roll (recto), where the direction of the fibers of the papyrus was horizontal and thus offered the least possible resistance to the writing tube, the calamus, or quill, Latin penna scriptoria. Have a look at the described ancient scrolls on the Roman store pages!
