Wooden Roman border watchtower
Use the crafting sheet to make your own faithful copy of a wooden Roman watchtower, as it was used to defend the Roman border for centuries.
A world-famous relic of Roman history
This type of watchtower, which you can recreate using this craft kit, was part of the famous border fortifications of the Roman Empire, the Limes.
This term is used to describe border walls that were intended to separate the Roman Empire from the Germanic Empire.
In the beginning, the Limes ramparts consisted only of woven fences, which were additionally secured by wooden watchtowers that followed one another at short intervals.
Later, the rather insecure fences were replaced by robust wooden palisades, and the watchtowers also later appeared in a sturdy stone design.

The watchtower as the most important defense post
Around 900 watchtowers were erected along the Limes.
If an attack was suspected from this post, auxiliary troops from nearby forts could be notified by smoke signal to support the attacked watchtower.
Nevertheless, the limes was not built as a defense against major Germanic attacks, as the Roman Empire was so strong under the rule of the emperors Domitian, Trajan and Hadrian that it did not need to fear such attacks.
Instead, robbers and roving bands were to be kept away from the empire.
