Gemma augustea relief with Emperor Augustus
The original of our replica is a cut gemstone from Roman antiquity. It consists of two layers of Arabic sardonyx and measures 19 x 23 cm.
The semi-precious stone was probably made after 10 AD in a workshop that was founded in Rome.
The Gemma in Vienna
The Gemma Augustea is one of the showpieces of the Antiquities collection of the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, Austria (Inv.-Nr AS IXa 79).
The Emperor Augustus is displayed on his throne, together with the personification of Roma, the urban deity of the capital of the Empire. He is crowned with the oikoumene, the sign for the global outreach of Rome. Augustus’ successor Tiberius is shown in a chariot that is driven by the goddess of victory, Victoria, who rises at the left edge of the image. In the bottom frame, victorious Roman Legionaries set a Tropaion (monument), while subdued 'Barbarians' are watching the scene.
