The tools of Egyptian scribes: natural rush
The scribe's craft is depicted on numerous stone reliefs and papyri. The natural rush is his quill. There is hardly an Egyptian profession of which we are so well informed through grave goods and wall paintings. On these pages of the Roman Shop you will find a first-class replica of the Egyptian scribe: a natural, genuine rush with the scribe's palette for writing like the ancient Egyptians.
Softly chewed natural rush and palette for writing
The rushes are cut thinly at the end or chewed softly in the traditional way (natural rush). The paint is then moistened with a little liquid, as with watercolors, and it is ready to write.
- Writing palette size 30x7 cm
- incl. 5 writing rushes from Egypt
- Red and black tempera paint in the palette
Egyptian scribes
Being a scribe meant bearing a lot of responsibility and was a very desirable profession in the eyes of the Egyptians. Grandiloquent hymns of praise were written praising the scribe's work to the skies. For example, the scribes noted down exactly how much was harvested, how many houses and estates there were in a district and how many people lived there. These lists were then used to determine the taxes to be paid, which consisted of natural goods such as grain, cattle, wine, oil, honey, cloth and other items. Incidentally, officials also had to pay taxes in the form of gold, silver, linen, grain and livestock.
Writer's palette and rush for teaching
You can make your lessons entertaining and very interesting for your pupils with the real natural rush and a writing palette. After all, there's nothing like trying things out for yourself. Show the pupils the alphabet of the ancient Egyptians and let them draw the hieroglyphs on the palettes. This is a tactile experience that makes the lesson vivid and fun. The pupils can chew their rush into the shape they need for writing. The flatter the writing tip is, the more calligraphic the writing appears - which has a real decorative value with an Egyptian alphabet! Fascinate your pupils with these authentic writing instruments from the time of the ancient Egyptians.
