Ancient Rome in the south of France
The Pont du Gard bridge, dating from Roman times, spans a Roman water channel in southern France at an impressive height and was built by the Romans using the Roman ashlar construction method. Limestone from nearby quarries was used to build the monumental bridge. Around one thousand workers were employed and created a masterpiece of Roman architecture in around three years of construction. Today, the Pont du Gard is one of the best-preserved Roman structures in Europe, and with the Pont du Gard, the Romans created a water conduit of around fifty kilometers in length between the southern French cities of Uzès and Nimes. The builder was the Roman general Agrippa, who was commissioned by his father-in-law, Emperor Augustus, to build a fifty-kilometer-long water pipeline from a water source to the present-day city of Nimes in southern France. Agrippa then selected the most capable engineers in the Roman Empire. They discovered that the route only had a slight difference in height of around seventeen meters. In addition, the river Gardon crossed the planned course of the aqueduct. Agrippa therefore decided to build a bridge. The Pont du Gard is an architectural masterpiece and is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
