Handicraft Instructions – The Thracian

Get to know the history of ancient Rome playfully thanks to small deities, gladiators and legionnaires: The handicraft instructions Historicals help children to explore their fantasies and learn historical contexts.

Which one could be more fascinating than the history of Spartacus, the Roman gladiator who led a slave rebellion against the Roman Empire? Spartacus is possibly the most well-known Thracian gladiator in history. During the Third Servile War 73-71 BCE, which was also called Gladiator War or referring to its leader War of Spartacus, the Roman gladiator roamed Italy with an army of freed slaves and won more than one battle, until he was finally defeated himself.

The accessories of the well-armed Roman gladiator in 3D are a short sword (sica) and an Attic-Boeotian helmet, both are mobile and removable. He wears an arm guard (manica) on his sword-arm and a rectangular, convex shield (parma, parmula) as well as a loincloth, shin guard and belt.

The designation Thracian (Thraex) for gladiators is a result of the Roman campaigns in the Balkan area, when countless Thracians were captured and displaced to Rome, where they had to fight as gladiators. Later this term was used to describe a gladiator class whose fighters could be of quite different origin.
The Roman gladiator Thraex would oppose the Murmillo in battle, this combination was one of the most popular duels in ancient Rome.

This handicraft instruction is designed with archaeological scrutiny and makes a point of historically correct details. It is easy enough to be suited for children and meticulous enough to fascinate the little warriors who are crazy about history.
