Roman Ceramic Cup in Red Clay
What a wonderfully intricate relief bowl with delicate dancers! The very finely crafted bowl shines because of its finish as reddish Terra Sigillata. This type of pottery was very expensive in Roman antiquity and so probably only Romans from wealthy households used this dish for special occasions. The surrounding relief shows very detail dancers and their rhythmic celebration at a ceremony.
- Dimensions 22x11cm
- Terra Sigillata
The bowl measures approximately 22 to 11 cm and is made of red Terra Sigillata. The term terra sigillata goes back to the middle ages were it meant the sealed red clay, but in the 18th century scholars transferred the name to the special ancient Roman ceramics of glossy ware. Terra Sigillata (TS) is, therefore, the modern name of a specific category of Roman table ware, which was developed at the end of the 1st century BC in Italian workshops (Arezzo). The fine tableware was produced in large quantities in cottage factories, which often stamped their goods with their initials.
The goods in all its variations found a market in the entire Roman Empire. Thanks to our authentic replica craft, we still can enjoy today the popular glazed reddish clay dishes. They fit wonderfully to other dishes on the table! For example use a white, delicate porcelain or a more robust type of ceramics, even silverware fits and adorns the table.
