The goddess Isis
In Egyptian mythology, the goddess Isis is the wife of Osiris, the god of the afterlife. She is responsible for magic, birth and rebirth, but as the wife of Osiris she is also responsible for the afterlife and death. Her cult dates back to the Old Kingdom (2700 to 2200 BC) - even later, for example under Greek and Roman rule in Egypt, the goddess Isis continued to be worshipped. In Greek and Roman antiquity, the cult of Isis became so popular that it can almost be said to have flourished. The Greeks often associated Isis with Demeter and Aprodite and worshipped her primarily in western Asia Minor - although there were also places of worship in Athens, Delos and Samothrace. The worship of the goddess Isis also flourished in the Roman Empire, and under Sulla's dictatorship a temple was even built on the Capitol. Exactly when the cult originated has not yet been satisfactorily clarified - nor has the actual place of origin of the worship. The goddess Isis is regarded as a typical mother and protective deity who is not feared, but rather loved.

How do I recognize the goddess Isis?
Traditionally, the goddess Isis is shown standing or kneeling. She is very delicately built and wears a throne seat on her head. Her attributes are the papyrus sceptre or an ankh cross, which she holds in her hand. In the Roman Empire in particular, she is often depicted with a sistrum , an ancient rattle, or a menite , also a type of rattle, but which could also be worn as jewelry. Other attributes may include cow horns or a sun disk on her head. Sometimes the goddess Isis is also shown as a black kite, a wailing bird, which may also have a human body in later depictions.
