How do I use my wax tablet?
Writing:
With the pointed side of the stylus, using light pressure in "downward movements", carve the letters into the wax.
Erasing:
The flat side of the stylus can be used to erase what has been written. To do this, take the stylus as shown and place your index finger on the flattened part of the stylus.
In this way, you can smooth out the wax again with
gentle pressure in a "pulling" motion.
Fun fact
The term "tabula rasa" comes from Roman times and the use of the wax tablet. It means "smoothly scraped slate" and is used as a figure of speech for "clearing the air".
What do archaeologists say?
Fact:
From an archaeological point of view, there is no evidence of writing tablets with round corners. All the corners of the wax surfaces are right-angled.
And why?
Well, when scraping out the wax surfaces to refill them, the tools needed are right-angled (e.g. wax spatulas). This makes it very easy to remove the wax without damaging the board.
Wax Tablet - Roman Writing Tablet
If you want to embark on a written journey into Roman antiquity, reach for an ancient wax tablet with a stylus! On the wax writing surface made of wood and wax, nothing is meant to last forever. The Roman wax tablet, called "cera" or "tabula" in Latin, was usually a rectangular board coated with real beeswax: an ancient wax tablet.
The ancient wax tablets were used until the Middle Ages and were inscribed with a stylus (Latin: "stilus"), by engraving letters into the wax layer.
How did the Romans use the ancient wax tablets?
During Roman times, wax tablets were used as writing material for official correspondence as well as for private use. They were utilized for all kinds of recordings that didn’t need to be permanent, such as accounts, letters, notes, or drafts of literary texts.

Erasing the Wax Tablet: "tabula rasa" - how does it work?
The texts on the wax tablet could be revised at any time or smoothed out with the flat side of the stylus. To do this, hold the stylus as flat as possible and drag (do not push!) across the wax surface to redistribute the wax evenly. School lessons in Roman times would not have been conceivable without the Roman wax tablet - all students in Roman times had the ancient wax tablets in their packs - and of course, they were glad that their mistakes could be corrected so quickly.
About the Ancient Wax Tablet
Each wax tablet from the Roman shop is handcrafted from pure domestic beech wood and filled with natural beeswax. The wax tablets are perfect for engraving Roman numerals and Latin homework! Included with the ancient wax tablet is an ABC writing sheet for the template of ancient script.
Tabula rasa: cleaning the tablet
The well-known term "tabula rasa" actually comes from smoothing the wax layer of the ancient wax tablet with the back of the stylus or "stilus" and means "erased tablet" or "cleaned tablet" - in the sense of a new beginning.
