Coins - authentic evidence of ancient culture
It is not possible to say exactly how and when the first coins came into circulation as a means of payment. At a time when goods were only exchanged, problems naturally arose. So the first solution developed was so-called primitive money. These included arrowheads, feathers, lumps of mineral or pearls. Such exchanged natural money could then be exchanged again for other goods. The first known, bulky coins date back to the 6th century BC, the so-called stater coins. They originated in Lydia.
Coins of the Caesars - noble and characteristic
In the 1st to 4th centuries AD, the Romans brought the aureus into circulation. An aureus was minted from the finest fine gold and weighed 8.19 grams. It was very valuable and was the monthly pay of a soldier under Emperor Augustus. Aureii were coins of various Caesars and were minted with their portraits. Of all the coin portraits of Roman emperors, the image of Julius Caesar was the first to be minted on coins by a living ruler.
