Roman urn made of blue glass
Roman glass urn - cremation
After centuries of burying bodies, in 600 BC Rome followed the example of Greece and began cremating the dead.
The burial ceremonies of antiquity were rituals determined by faith and tradition. The dying person's breath had to be caught, the dead person perfumed and laid out with their feet towards the exit of the house. A coin was placed in his mouth to enable him to cross the River Styx to the underworld by the old ferryman Charon. During the cremation, the lamentations were not allowed to fall silent and the goddess of the dead, Libtinia, watched over everything to ensure that the living did not make a mistake.
Columbarium and Roman glass urn
After the ashes had been extinguished with wine and the bones removed, they were buried in a glass or ceramic urn in an earth grave or a tomb in the form of an altar.
Poor people had to make do with the columbarium, a kind of social housing for life after death, which they had already financed during their lifetime with small monthly contributions.

Roman glass urn among the finds in Cologne
Roman urns are known from grave finds, but sometimes there are also lucky breaks, such as the subway railroad construction in Cologne, during which spectacular finds from the Roman period were made between 2004 and 2011. AD, which are now housed in the Roman-Germanic Museum. The glass from this period was already mouth-blown and clear and could be produced in large quantities.
The beginning of the 5th century AD marked the end of cremation, as it did not fit in with Christianity's ideas of eternal life. At the same time, firewood became scarce in the Mediterranean country and burial in the ground was once again the preferred option.
