Diploma Militaris
A military diploma (Latin: diploma militaris) is a document that was used in the Roman Empire to confirm to soldiers and members of other branches of the armed forces that they were granted Roman citizenship and the right to marry. As a rule, this was done upon discharge after what was usually 25 years of service. The document is a certified copy of the edict originally published in the capital, Rome. The term 'military diploma' is actually misleading, but is nevertheless still commonly used in ancient historical research.
On the so-called 'diploma' the complete titulature and the name of the respective emperor (Neckarburken = Hadrianus and Weissenburg = Traianus ) is mentioned. This is followed by an enumeration of those troops from which the veterans came and under whose supreme command they were. Then follows the recognition of the civil rights for the titled and his family. Only at the end of the document the name of the person and his unit are mentioned, as well as the names of his family members to whom this right also applies. The diplomas were made of bronze.
