Chi Rho - identifying symbol of early Christians
The two Greek letters Chi and Rho were used as a monogram for Jesus Christ in late antiquity. The religious symbol Chi Rho, also known as the Christogram or Constantinian cross, was used alongside the fish (Ictus) as an identifying sign and symbol of faith among ancient Christians from as early as the 2nd century AD - meaning that the Chi Rho was created in Christian symbolic language even before the later cross. Later it was often combined with the alpha and omega, the first and last letters of the alphabet and the symbols for the beginning and the end.

The meaning of the Chi Rho monogram
Chi and Rho are the first two letters and thus the abbreviation of the Greek word for Christ. As the Greek letters are very similar in appearance to the Latin letters X and P, the Chi Rho symbol was given a further layer of meaning - P and X used to be interpreted as an abbreviation for Pax, peace. Chi Rho therefore not only stands for Christ himself, but also, in combination with the Latin spelling of the letters, as a symbol for peace and thus for Christ as the bringer of peace and the peaceful intention of the ancient Christians.
"In this sign you will be victorious" - Chi Rho and Emperor Constantine
One of the most famous stories about the late antique emperor Constant ine the Great is about the battle at the Milvian Bridge in Rome, before the start of which he is said to have seen the Chi Rho in a vision and the Christian god said to him "In this sign you willbe victorious". The emperor is said to have then ordered all his soldiers to paint the Chi Rho on their shields and to carry the symbol as a field emblem from then on. Incidentally, it is more likely that this only happened in connection with the lesser-known battle against his co-emperor Licinius in 324 AD, as Constantine only finally converted to Christianity after this.
