Roman Omega brooch
Ring brooches in the shape of the Greek letter omega were worn almost unchanged for generations in antiquity. Strata dating from Augst and Kaiseraugst prove that they were used from the early imperial period to the end of the 4th century. The omega brooch is by far one of the longest and most widespread types of ancient brooch and was already in use by Celts, Romans and Germanic tribes 2000 years ago. The pin of the omega brooch is simply inserted through the fabric of the cloak on the right shoulder (for right-handed people) and then locked with the round part so that the brooch does not come loose.
Bronze omega brooch
Brooches as garment pins have been part of men's and women's costumes since ancient times. They consist of a pin and a hanger or a cover. The oldest brooches consist of two parts; in the more recent examples, the pin and bow are connected continuously by a springy spiral or by a hinge. The brooches of the Roman period usually consisted of a single link, i.e. they were cast in one piece with the bow and the pin. The material was bronze or silver, rarely iron.
One of the known descendants of the crossbow brooch type was the Roman onion-head brooch. Some forms spread throughout northern Europe, both among the western and eastern Germanic tribes and among the Scandinavians. For example, the numerous "eye brooches"; in Scandinavia, both East Germanic and West Germanic brooches can be found during the Roman period; however, there are numerous peculiar local types here as well as in Germany.

The original of this antique piece of jewelry comes from a private collection. The replica on the Roman Shop pages of the Forum Traiani under the category Museum Shop and Gift Ideas in the Romans section was made by hand from real bronze. The pin of the brooch, which is around 33 in diameter and made of solid cast bronze, was forged and is therefore very stable and usable.
