Caesar's victory on marble magnet
The Greek writer Plutarch reports that Caesar wrote this saying in a letter to his friend Gaius Matius after the Battle of Zela. His veterans had won the victory over the troops of Pharnakes II of Pontus in only four hours on 21 May 47 B.C. of the Julian calendar. After Sueton, Iulius Caesar's triumphal procession over Pontus carried a shield with these three words. The statement can be seen literarily as an alliterative climax - although Caesar certainly did not go down in ancient history as a rhetorician!
