The original of this faithfully reproduced coin comes from a mint in Rome and dates back to 80/81 AD. The original is now in the British Museum in London.
The front shows affectionately the Colosseum (amphitheatrum flavium) from diagonally above. This is depicted with four floors. On the second floor even small statues can be seen in the arches! Inside one can see the fully occupied spectator stands. To the left of the Colosseum is a high fountain (meta sudans) and on the right a two-storey building. This detailed Roman coin celebrated the completion of the Flavian amphitheatre (colosseum) in 81 AD.
