Roman kantharos with studs
The kantharos in Greece and Rome
The kantharos was already being used as a beaker in Greece in the 8th century BC. It is characterized by the two opposing handles that are raised well above the rim of the cup.
The god Dionysus is often depicted with the kantharos. From the 4th century BC, the kantharoi are often found as burial objects or as votive offerings when symbolic sacrifices were made, when rescued from an emergency or as votive offerings to a deity. The kantharoi of this period were made of ceramic.

Rome, 1st century - increasing glass production
From the 2nd century BC, glass kantharoi were also produced in Rome. From the 1st century onwards, glass production increased and glassware became affordable. Very different shapes have been preserved. The glass was not yet clear, but mostly colored and dull, but with an irresistible charm. People played with the shape of the handles, which varied greatly in length and often had a small plate at the top that looked as if it should serve as a rest for a tired thumb. The kantharos usually had a foot, but there were also vessels without a foot.
The technique became more sophisticated and in late antiquity the glass was painted or decorated with appliqués and knobs.

A very special Roman beaker
This kantharos is an exceptionally beautiful piece. The clear glass, combined with the green of the short foot and the attachment of the two handles, conveys a feeling of freshness and purity, a touch of spring lies over this little treasure.
The rim of the vessel is given a lively finish by the thread rings.
