Pelta primer - what is it?
Fibulae are not only learning books for first-time readers, but also - usually decorated - garment clasps from antiquity, comparable to today's safety pins.
Mostly made of metal, they were often used as a decorative element and to fasten clothing and have numerous design variations. The manufacturing process is time-consuming and laborious due to the casting and polishing, but is worthwhile in view of the handsome and representative brooch.
The name is derived from the Latin fibula = clasp.
The pelta from the combination pelta fibula is of Greek origin and refers to a light shield for defense.
The pelta fibula is multiple protection and shield and symbolizes the unification of the Mediterranean region. The ancient world differs from other epochs in its common traditions and their expression - also in clothing.

Practical everyday object
Just as you simply open and close a trouser button or zipper today, in Roman times the pelta brooch was the only way to reopen the mostly wrapped garments (toga, tunic) or headdress. In addition to the practical use just described, the brooch also served as a status symbol with its simple elegance or richly decorated ornaments and gemstones. The pelta brooch shown here is more an expression of simple dominion and symbolizes the wearer's trust in shield and protection.
Geometry
The canonical semi-circular shape of the pelta, originally of Greek origin, was extended in the course of history so that it acquired a bulbous body with longer or short ends and, apart from the defense association, is mainly an expression of symmetry. The bronze pelta brooch on offer is therefore pleasing to the eye and also useful.
Change of perspective - living history
The Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne has a large collection of brooches - however, in addition to such a theoretical educational excursion, it is worth slipping into the skin of the Romans and venturing on a journey through time with acquired decorative ornaments such as the high-quality pelta brooch on offer.
