The history of the Inuits / Eskimos
Eskimos, or Inuits, live high up in the north. They call the island of Greenland, Alaska or northern Canada their home. Today life takes place in wooden houses . The igloos are mostly only shelter during hunting trips, when the weather changes here and the Inuit need protection. In earlier times, however, the igloos were the only living space . It was sleeping and cooking place at the same time. Even celebrations were held in extra large igloos that could accommodate more than 100 people.
The faith of the Eskimos of the "old time" was exemplary, because they saw themselves as part of the big whole. Man and animal were of equal value! Also the Inuit had their deities. In connection with them they stood over the shaman. The shaman is a kind of priest who could let his soul wander, for example to make the gods friendly for hunting.
Today many Eskimos / Inuit are Christians with the knowledge from "old times" that without respect for nature no life is possible.
