The consecration altar in the Roman household
In Roman times, all areas of life were under the protection of certain deities. Wherever a god could not be identified by name, in the Roman imagination at least one protective spirit was active.
The guardian spirits served to protect certain persons as well as localities. The protective gods of the house, the lares were omnipresent.
An altar, the so-called lararium, was dedicated to the deities and the ancestors of the families in most houses, not far from the hearth. Offerings were regularly made on the domestic altar of consecration.
This ritual provided space within the families for personal piety and the specific worship of deities and patron gods.
As numerous finds prove, often the domestic consecration altar made of clay or bronze even bore an inscription with the name of the worshipped guardian spirit. Presumably, at that time a consecration altar was usually in connection with a Lar statuette.
Living accessory of antique altar
Presumably, the altar of consecration was already at that time not only intended for the function, but also a decorative object, which expressed the prosperity of the family.
Use the antique altar from the time of the Roman Empire for the effective decoration of your home. A beautiful Roman piece with millennia of mythological significance.
