Alexander the Great - king, general and conqueror
Alexander the III Great (336-323 BC) was king of Macedonia and hegemon until his death and is probably considered the greatest conqueror in history. With his so-called "Alexander campaign" and the conquest of the Archaemenid Empire, he extended his rule to the Indian subcontinent. After his invasion of Egypt, he was named Pharaoh there. The age of Hellenism began with his accession to power. As a result, Greek culture spread across large parts of the world. Due to his great popularity and his military successes, the life of Alexander the Great has a lasting presence in art and culture and is a much-used motif.
Alexander the Great - a ruler with a penchant for self-deification
In his Hellenistic empire, the Macedonian drachma was established by Alexander the Great. The reason for the coin's huge mintage was the need to use the enormous treasures captured from Persia to finance his military campaign. This could only be done in the form of coins, as they were needed to pay the soldiers, but also for supplies and gifts.
As the leading currency, it was the standard for all other coins still in circulation. Trade and business, which extended as far as North Africa and Asia, were greatly facilitated as a result. On silver drachms that Alexander the Great had put into circulation, the obverse of the coin depicts Alexander as the god Anun with a ram's horn - evidence of his self-deification. Athena can be seen on the reverse. These precious and rare coins bear witness to the glory and greatness of an ancient ruler.
