Pelta Fibula - What is it?!
Fibulas - these aren’t just bones in the calf of your leg, but also, usually decorated, clasps for the robe of antiquity, comparable to today's safety pins.
Generally made out of metal, they not only act as decorative elements but are also used to keep clothes fastened. They have numerous design variations. The manufacturing process is time-consuming and cumbersome, involving casting and polishing, but it is worth it as this results in a sizeable and representative brooch.
The name is derived from the Latin fibula = clasp.
The pelte, from the combination of pelta and fibula, is of Greek origin and means a lightweight shield for defence.
The pelta fibula is multiple-purpose protector and shield and a symbol of the union of the Mediterranean area. The ancient times differ from other eras – for example in the clothing of the period, but at the same time there was a merging of common traditions and their expression.
- ca. 3.8 cm diameter
- Real metal
Practical everyday object
Today you can fasten and unfasten clothes using buttons or zips. In Roman times, the pelta was the only way to reopen garments such as togas, tunics or headdresses, which were generally wound around the body. However, in addition to the practical benefits just described, the clasp also served as a status symbol through its simple elegance or by means of ornate ornaments and gemstones. The pelta fibula shown is a simple expression of status and symbolizes the confidence of the wearer to shield and protect.
Geometry
The canonical semi-circular shape of the pelte is of Greek origin and has been extended over the course of history, it became a bulbous body with long or short endings and in addition to its association with defence is mainly expression of symmetry. The pelta fibula made of bronze which we offer is therefore beautiful to look at as well as useful.
Change of perspective - living history
The Roman-Germanic Museum in Cologne has a large collection of fibulae - and in addition to undertaking a training excursion to understand the theory, it is worth slipping into the skin of the Romans and daring to make a trip back in time by means of jewellery such as the quality ornamental pelta fibula we offer.
