The faithful details make this piece an extraordinary portrait of the Roman Emperor Traian (Trajan). The bust is made of hardened marble dust and comes on a polished black marble base. An ornament for the shelf or desk of any antique lover!
The painting examples show how detailed and vibrant the bust can appear. Archaeologically, the painting of busts in antiquity has long been proven, as special exhibitions, for example 'Colorful Gods' show.
Trajan, the first Roman emperor who came from a province, is considered the best Roman princeps (optimus princeps) in the historiography traditionally written by senators.

Trajan takes over the rule
After the years of Domitian's reign, which were marked by persecutions and executions of Roman senators, and the end of the Flavian dynasty, the short reign of his predecessor Nerva and especially Trajan established the adoptive emperorship.
With the conquest of Armenia, Mesopotamia and especially the Dacian Empire, the Roman Empire experienced its greatest expansion under his rule. Domestically, Trajan aimed to strengthen Italy and promote Romanization in the provinces through extensive building and social measures.
