The history of the drinking horn
Drinking horns have been used as drinking vessels since ancient times. They were originally made from the horns of bison or aurochs. The oldest archaeological evidence of drinking horns dates back to the Bronze Age. Evidence of drinking horns made of metal, ceramics and glass dates back to the later Iron Age. Drinking horns made of clay and metal were also reproduced in Ancient Greece.
The era of the Vikings
The Vikings were a feared people. For almost 300 years, they spread fear and terror far and wide. They plundered towns and monasteries, conquered vast territories and murdered and enslaved their victims. On the other hand, as merchants they developed a largely peaceful network of trade and friendship that stretched from the North Cape to the Middle East. Furthermore, Viking culture was diverse in terms of religion, mythology, art and literature, which shows that the Vikings were by no means just a barbaric and savage people.
The drinking customs of the Vikings
For the Vikings, drinking together had an important and, above all, social function. It promoted the community of the people, but could also serve to demonstrate differences in rank. In the Edda, drinking bouts often play a role in the various plots. Drinking together also had a deep significance in a cultic context, for example at sacrificial feasts or funerals.
Information on use/legal notice:
These drinking horns are made in small craft workshops. The certification required by law, which is disproportionately cost-intensive, would have an extreme impact on the sales price. For this reason, the drinking horns are only offered as props, which by definition are not certified for contact with food.
